*At CASPA, we believe in the power of family restoration, knowing that where it is safe and possible, supporting families through the process leads to better outcomes, especially for children.*
Jasmine* entered out-of-home care at a young age, with no immediate potential for restoration to her family. During her time in care, she thrived in her local community. She embraced school, joined her local footy club, and formed positive relationships with those around her. Her enthusiasm and involvement brought a family-like warmth to her home environment, and her connection to her Mum remained strong, supported by CASPA throughout her journey.
However, Jasmine’s world was turned upside down by the sudden passing of her Mum. Overcome with grief, she began to withdraw from her usual activities, her school attendance dropped, and her once vibrant social life grew quiet.
With persistent and compassionate support from her CASPA care team, Jasmine gradually found her way back. Drawing strength from cultural perspectives and her community, she began to navigate her loss. A key figure in her journey was a member of a local women’s group, who turned out to be part of Jasmine’s extended family. This connection deepened her sense of belonging and helped re-establish her engagement with education and the activities she once loved.
As Jasmine regained her confidence and reconnected with her community, CASPA advocated for her reunification with her relative. It wasn’t without its challenges, including the need to secure suitable accommodation, but together, they overcame these hurdles. Now living with her extended family, Jasmine continues to thrive, building a bright and stable future.
Jasmine’s story is one of several reunifications facilitated by CASPA this year. So far, three young people who were expected to remain in out-of-home care until adulthood have been successfully reunited with family, demonstrating the life-changing impact of supporting and advocating for restoration.
