Supporting families when services are stretched

CASPA’s Casino Family Supports program works alongside families across the Richmond Valley, offering early intervention and practical support that helps families stay safe and connected in their community.

In regional areas like Casino, families already face limited access to services, long wait times and fewer crisis options. The recent closure of a specialist domestic and family violence (DFV) service, alongside ongoing cost-of-living pressures and housing shortages, has led to a growing number of families turning to general family support services like ours for help.

Since July 2025, Casino Family Supports has supported 41 families, representing 225 individuals. Of these, 38 families required post-domestic and family violence  support, including help to set up new homes, access essential items, attend court and medical appointments, connect with counselling and DFV services, and respond to children’s behavioural needs. We have also supported single parents, Aboriginal families and even fathers experiencing DFV, where few tailored services exist.

Families often have to leave unsafe situations at short notice, sometimes with nothing at all. In the Richmond Valley, where limited access and funding make replacing essential items quickly a challenge, donations accessed through organisations like GIVIT and Thread Together allow us to respond with speed and with dignity. Essentials such as children’s clothing, nappies and wipes, cots, bedding, basic furniture and food or fuel vouchers help establish safety and provide hope for families as they begin to heal and rebuild.
