CASPA Permanency Support team recently accomplished a remarkable family restoration, reuniting a family after five years of separation. The challenges faced by this family, including intergenerational trauma, domestic violence, and substance misuse, led to the children being placed in out-of-home care. However, with the support of loving and nurturing carers, the parent, Sandy*, was able to focus on reclaiming her life.
Sandy took proactive steps towards her restoration journey by successfully completing a year-long rehabilitation program and prioritizing her sobriety. After achieving this significant milestone, Sandy's next goal was to secure safe and stable housing. With the heartfelt support of her community and extended family, she found a place to live and obtained steady employment. By overcoming these additional challenges, Sandy could now focus on parenting and working towards permanent reunification with her children.
CASPA's Permanency Support team recognized Sandy's determination to rebuild her life and reunite with her children. After meeting all the court's requirements and more, the team advocated for the restoration of the family. Throughout the time the children were in out-of-home care, Sandy maintained consistent contact with them. However, both Sandy and her children longed to be reunited. To support Sandy in positively parenting her children, family time visits were increased, and a three-month transition plan was developed with the aim of bringing the family back together at the plan's end.
Earlier this year, the transition plan was successfully completed, and the family was restored. But they are not alone in this journey. CASPA will continue to stand by Sandy and her children during the next phase of their healing process. The children's carers, who have maintained a close and loving relationship with the children's extended biological family, will also play a vital role in supporting the restoration.
While family restoration can be challenging, witnessing children safely return home to their parents brings immense joy to CASPA Services as a family services organization. We are incredibly proud of Sandy and her accomplishments in reuniting with her children, and we are grateful for the opportunity to remain involved in their lives. The dedication and commitment shown by our carers, who understand that restoration is in the best interest of the children, is truly commendable, even though they may experience feelings of grief and sadness during the process.
