Foster carers are the heart of the CASPA village.
They show up every day with love, patience and resilience. Through a pandemic, natural disasters and rising living costs, they’ve remained a steady presence for the trauma-affected young people in their care. It may be rewarding, but it’s not easy. And while money isn’t the reason they care, financial support can make a real difference.
We’re pleased to share that from 1 January 2026, the NSW Government will increase the base carer allowance by 20%. This is the first real carer allowance increase in over 20 years and part of a $1.2 billion Child Protection Package aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people.
CASPA is committed to making sure all eligible carers receive any government increase in full.
The change is a long-overdue step in recognising the essential role carers play in the lives of young people in out-of-home care. We applaud the NSW Government and the Minister for Families and Communities, Kate Washington, for making this change. While this recognition is a step in the right direction, it shouldn’t be the final one.
CASPA is committed to advocating for our carers to ensure their voices continue to be heard and their needs are met. Thank you to our valued carers for everything you do.
*CASPA is communicating with DCJ as this change takes place and will update this article as new information becomes available.
