Young people's stories: Sarah

A young couple in formal attire dance together surrounded by balloons. They are happy..

For young people living in out-of-home care, high school can come with unique challenges, and Sarah* faced more than her fair share. Already navigating complex circumstances, Sarah lost her home and belongings during last year’s devastating floods. But with the right support, she’s shown incredible resilience and determination to grow and thrive.

CASPA’s Education Program is designed to support young people like Sarah, ensuring they’re prepared for life after care. By offering guidance, building confidence, and creating opportunities, our team helps students overcome barriers and achieve their goals.

Sarah’s journey began when she was paired with Mel, one of CASPA’s dedicated Education Support Workers. Through regular tutoring at our Education Centre, Mel became a vital part of Sarah’s high school experience, offering support with assignments, teaching self-regulation strategies, and encouraging Sarah to dream about her future.

When Sarah began preparing for her higher school certificate (HSC), Mel recognised the need for extra support to ensure Sarah could perform to her potential. Advocating on her behalf, Mel successfully arranged special provisions through the Department of Education, allowing Sarah’s care team to accompany her during exams. This adjustment gave Sarah the confidence to focus and show her true capabilities.

The support didn’t stop there. Sarah also gained valuable work experience, helping her apply her studies in real-world settings. These opportunities built her confidence and prepared her for life beyond high school.

“It was incredible to see the boost in her confidence, especially in unfamiliar settings with unfamiliar people”, Mel recalls.

Sarah’s growth was clear as she progressed from struggling with assignments to embracing new challenges with confidence. And as her high school journey came to a close, the CASPA team made sure to celebrate every milestone, including one of the most symbolic – her year 12 formal.

Recognising the significance of this event, Mel accompanied Sarah to her day of preparation and proudly captured the special night with photos. It was a moment of joy and achievement, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

Sarah’s story is one of many that show the impact of CASPA’s Education Program. By combining personalised support, innovative strategies, and a collaborative approach, we can help young people living in out-of-home care thrive. Sarah’s journey demonstrates that with the right care and encouragement, every young person has the potential to overcome challenges and be confident in their independence.
